Hey Gang,

I have jumped on the pixel ads bandwagon and now have a site where you can get advertising on WorldVillage.com at incredibly low prices.

Check out Worldvillage Pixel Ads

http://pixelads.worldvillage.com

You purchase pixels in blocks of 100 at .50/pixel. That's just $50 for your pixel space. But here is the coolest part. You also submit a 144 x 144 image that appears when you roll your mouse over the pixels. Not only is this awesome for the advertiser, but it is a great novelty for people surfing the site. That makes their click all the more likely.

This is the FIRST PLACE I have announced this, so grab your pixel space quickly!

Joel,

I think the rollover image is exceptionally cool. Very innovative. Is that original to you, or had you seen it done elsewhere first?

Just to clarify two points:

1. Are you saying that one of those tiny little units is $50? The 10x10 pixel spaces? Cuz if so...I think it's a cool concept, but as the space fills up, it seems to me that it will become much less likely that anyone will ever see your ads. Maybe it's cuz I'm getting old and blind...but those spaces are so small that, once they're packed tightly together, I feel like it will be more a matter of luck than intent to have your large ad pop up.

2. I note that, when I roll over the image, the link appears to be a redirect. Is this not a direct link, then? Not that a site with that many outbound links would pass much PR anyway...but I just wanted to be sure I was reading that right.

I think the pixel ads are a fun idea. And I love your rollovers. Still trying to decide on the relative value.

thx,
c-

Can't recall where I saw the link to this, but an interesting read:

http://www.bradfallon.com/2005/10/discuss-pixel-ads-be-there-by-being-a-small-square.html

I guess the angle I've been wondering more about is the relative value over time of simply having a link on one of these such pages, a link of any size, assuming that something like Google's PageRank doesn't factor in whether an image _link_ is 1000x1000 pixels or 10x10 pixels?

I mean, pretend that milliondollarhomepage.com eventually becomes PR10. (Pretend, I said.) You and I both bought pixel space there. You paid $2000 for your pixel space/link. I paid $100 for mine. When it comes to human eyes, of course your image will be seen first, but in terms of being linked to from a PR10 page, who got the better bargain?

Too soon to tell whether pixel ads are fad or new force to be reckoned with, I think, but fun to speculate just the same.

P.S. Just noticed this one: http://usmilliondollarhomepage.com/ US$1,000,000 for each state. Nothing wrong with thinking big, but I'll wager a million dollars I don't have that that site owner is _not_ going to clear $50 million. :D

Bottom line.. you don't buy pixel ads for the page rank because image links don't matter. BUT, buying pixel ads on a site with page rank AND high Alexa ranking means more people are going to see your ad! You've got the muscle of a site currently ranked in the top 11,000 on the whole web, and I haven't really promoted it much yet. Combine that with the rollover images (which IS our idea.. no one else is doing it) and you have a winner.

Novel? Sure. Good real estate? I think so :-)

Honest question--because I honestly don't know--why don't image links matter?

P.S. Hope your cold abates soon. Mine too, for that matter.... :(

I believe Google looks for text links as representations of hyperlinks. I don't think they give much weight to image links. Someone correct me if I am wrong because this is not my specialty.

Joel

P.S. - you got a cold too? bummer...

This idea has already been done. Looks like you missed the boat. heh.

I don't agree. I think the idea has merit beyond PageRank, etc. WorldVillage is a solid, respected site with a family-friendly approach. To me, a link from a site like that...no matter how tiny the basic ad...is worth something. Especially to family-friendly sites like mine.

So...I put my money where my mouth is. I just laid out $50 for a pixel block on Joel's site. Not only do I want to support what he's trying to do, but I think the floating image ad over the top is very cool.

And, it's sort of a challenge to see how creative you can get with the allotted space. 10x10 pixels is very tiny. The question is: Can you really catch anyone's attention with it? Probably not...in a crowded field like a pixel ad page. But...when they do roll over your ad (and some will), you've got 144x144 to work with...a veritable FOOTBALL FIELD's worth of pixels! :D

So...look for lonely little me over there on Joel's page. Second star to the right...and straight on til morning! Errr...maybe that was 16 blocks from the left border, in the very top row. :p

You'll know it's me because an ad will pop up for Kids Music Web (http://kidsmusicweb.com) , with a little smiley face wearing headphones.

I'm on about a half dozen pixel sites now with links to a number of my sites. Some paid and some free. I think they're kind of fun. We'll see, in time, whether they were a pure fad or if there emerges from them some fairly interesting options. One thing we always know for sure...the wheels are turning in the next internet guru's mind, no matter where things stand right now. The next fad is well underway...we just haven't heard of it yet! :o

Hello everyone,

My site is similar to the ones you're discussing in this thread - it's The Million dollar Cow Page. The hopeful pull of this site is that it adds something to the genre - i.e. I've added cows.

I always wondered with these ad sites, what the clicker gets for coming to them in the first place (apart from the link). I tried to remedy this with a simple frames set up. Everytime you click on a link you get a cow - as well as redirected to the page of the advertiser.

I've just started the site up and am looking for interest. Please take a look at http://www.milliondollarcowpage.com.

That's funny, the_cow. I probably won't buy pixel space on your site, but I think that's a humorous, clever twist on the theme. Bully for you! ;)

And I see that someone has put their "I'm Rich, Your Not" banner ad on your site, just like on Alex Tew's site.

Could you pass this message on to that pixel-space buyer:

"Hey, Jerk, it's 'YOU'RE Not," not "YOUR not."

On second thought, maybe I will buy one that says: "I Can Spell, You Can't!"

(Just kidding around, simma down, simma down now....)
