View Full Version : Adsense Competition on the Horizon

Adsense is so wildly popular and profitable for Google that the other search engines such as Yahoo and MSN are working on their own contextual advertising. In fact, Yahoo has extended invitations to certain publishers to beta test their Adsense equivalent.
So how do you think this will change the landscape? For example, do you feel we will see more channels as a result of increased competition? How about a clear picture of what the income split will be between the search engine and the publisher?
What do you think will happen as a result of the competition for ad placement on websites that have top-drawer content?

Also, does anyone have a handle on whether someone will be able to offer AdSense ads and Yahoo ads.
I would think not (at least as I read the Terms of Service).
"We do not permit Google ads or search boxes accessing Google search services to be published on web pages that also contain what could be considered competing ads or services. If you have elected to receive contextually-targeted Google ads, this would include all other contextually-targeted ads or links on the same page as Google ads."
So, I guess we'll have to see how "the other folks" are doing as Yahoo revs up.
Me personally, I'm sticking with Google unless I see real incentive to change.

I was quite suprised to see these results from a YPN beta tester.
August: 1112% of Google
July-August: 189% of Google
June-August: 80% of Google
May-August: 56% of Google

I wonder if it would be ok to show Yahoo ads on some pages and Google ads on others on the same web site, would that be a TOS violation?

Yes, this is a violation of Google's TOS. You cannot put other similar contextual advertisements on your site, especially ones that look a lot like Google.

Actually, that should NOT be a vioalation, as long as you do NOT have BOTH sets of adds on the SAME page.
The TOS states that you can't have competing adds on the same page - two different pages within the same site can have completely different ads from completely different providers without any issues.

A site is not the same thing as a page! Show me where the TOS says that applies to the whole SITE. I don't think it does.

Flyer is correct. AdSense is PAGE driven, not SITE driven. So you should be able to put AdSense on one page and YahooSense on another. No worries.
Can't wait for YPN to roll out their program!

Hey Tim!
For those who don't know Tim Carter, he is the Doctor of Home Improvement. He is the King of Crown Molding. He is the.. oh, you get the idea. Tim's site appears in my ebook as an example of how to do AdSense correctly. Check out www.askthebuilder.com and I think you'll get some great ideas. Not only that, but you might find some tips for your home as well!
As for the question, competition in the free marketplace is usually a very good thing. I think that will be the case with Yahoo/Google/MSN as well. :-)

I applied to YPN at least a year ago, but have yet to be approved. It's currently "by invitation only".
However, I have begun partnering up on site development with some friends and acquaintances in recent months, and one of those partners was approved for YPN a couple weeks ago.
After she loaded the code on her site, it took a couple days for Yahoo to correctly get her site spidered and start showing quality ads. She says there aren't as many good ads on YPN as on Google.
HOWEVER...she is seeing double the revenue with YPN.
So I am definitely looking forward to being approved.
And I fully intend to blend them throughout my site. Not on the same page, of course. But, I'd like folks to be able to see the best and highest-paying Adsense ads possible on one page, and the best and highest-paying YPN ads on the next page that they are likely to visit.
