Hello,
I am also looking for a good forum software. What I learned from others is that vBulletin is good and easy to add adsense. I believe this is why Joel use this at Adsensechat.com, vBulletin cost $85 for a year.
An alternative is to use PHPBB which is free but if you want to insert adsense it is recommended that you hire a low cost programmer to assure that adsense will be placed where you want.
If you are going to choose PHPBB I recommend that you download PHPBB2 with SEO changes and Mod_Rewrite because it is search engine friendly here is the link http://www.debriyn.com/phpbb2.php
Hope this helps. Goodluck! :)

For free forum software, phpbb is definitely the best! I've been using it for many years now, never had any problems.

It actually makes more sense to buy a vbulletin owner license for $160. It never expires.
PhPBB is good, but is also know to have frequent security problems. You must keep it up to date at all times. I know of more than one site who has lost all their member data and posts.

Running a website means also spending time maintaining it. With a forum, in addition to moderating, it also means checking the correct operation of the software. Any software, vBulletin, phpBB, Windows, etc, will have bugs and security matters, and you need to be ready to implement fixes straight away. I don't think vBulletin is an exception to this. And I don't think the license you pay means the developers of vBulletin will be installing the updates for you.

I bought WowBB (http://www.wowbb.com/) because I really liked the feature set.
You can see it in action on my voiceover directory (http://www.ultimatevoicedirectory.com/forum/) site.
I think it was about $90.

As someone mentioned, PhpBB has lots of security holes.
I use InvisionBoard and found it very good.

This is a statement without any basis or proof. You're just trying to spread FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt).

Actually, this is coming from real life example of what happened to me.
phpBB got hacked, I patched it to the latest version, it got hacked yet again. (yes, I deleted all files and uploaded from clean so it's not any left over)
Gave up and switched to InvisionBoard and have been happy & hack free.

When you say "the latest version," which do you mean? Any of the recent ones? Current is 2.0.18.
One way you can help your installabtion be more secure is to subscribe to the phpBB announcements list so you can install a version as soon as it is released.

Hi Chuck,
Just curious but, doesn't the Google Adsense TOS say not to have the ads on a registration or thankyou page?
http://www.ultimatevoicedirectory.com/forum/login.php?register=1
I had the problem with the new site I am doing with PHPBB beiing in the header and it showing on all the pages even the login so I had to fix it to were it would only be on the content pages.
It is an awesome feature, I have it now in the header, the footer and after the first post made.
I can even exclude it from a certain forum categories if I wish or pages like register, or members. I intergrated it perfect :D Once it is complete I will post it for all to see..
