Okay, thinking out loud, excuse me, but can you effectively do a DIY version of Chitika? I mean, any old affiliate program like Art.com's or Amazon's lets you put a picture of a product on your site with a link to their store; you collect when the surfer clicks. At first glance Chitika is often sending you to Amazon, anyway, e.g., the hallowed ipod.
It seems the main appeal of Chitika is the visuals--a virtual store on your site, as it were--whereas Adsense is text-rich and image-free.
I guess I'm just not convinced the other elements of Chitika, comparison, etc., with the rollover are that big a deal. They certainly don't move me. Interactive is nice, beats Adsense, but it still seems fairly crude, unsophisticated.
Is Chitika's payout much higher than regular affiliates, is that the big thing? Others pay 20-30% whereas Chitika pays twice that, 60%?
I think it's been said that the click rate for Chitika ads is fairly low, but its payoff is fairly high, relatively speaking. Doesn't that make you think more thought needs to go into Chitika's core design/layout concepts?
Chitika lets you customize keywords, that's great, but isn't it all limited to which companies selling products are set up with Chitika?
Also, is it possible to build your own version of Chitika using similar code or more sophisticated programming to tailor an ad more to your liking, more relevant, more effective for sales?
What about a Flash version of Chitika? The internet is an evolving advertising medium and Chitika is still young. Wondering if it can be improved or if a better online ad system is possible.
You know, you could incorporate more visuals, even product enlargements on a rollover, the same as some stock photo sites. If they are not going to put links with the images, at least they can offer image enlargements. Right now Chitika is bare bones, no bells and whistles.
What about interactive mini Flash ad movies for your "mini malls"? Flash 8's new architecture with much faster image downloading should set off a chain reaction in online advertising, not to mention the advance of high speed internet connections.
Chitika now has a link on their home page entitled, "Bettering Banner Ads" (Sales & Marketing Management, September 2005). Which begs the question, when do we get an article, "Bettering Chitika Ads"?
