google likes backlinks, submit your site to directories so you have sites linking to you.
The backlinks are not updated very often, only every few months or so but build them up now and when google does the next update your rankings should improve. Then once that has happened build up some more links, do not try to do 100's at one time, google might not like this and punish you.

It's a little too late for this site, but the conventional wisdom is that you NEVER submit your sites to a search engine because doing so is a guaranteed way to get your site put in the search engine's "sandbox" or holding area while they watch your site for a few days, weeks, or months. That's what the search engine experts are saying, anyway.
If you can get your site mentioned in a popular blog somewhere, the search engines will find it on their own and you don't get "sandboxed" immediately.
Another tactic is to write an article that relates to your site's topic and post it (with your web site linked in the "about the author" section, of course) to one or more free article directories for e-zine publishers to grab and use in their publications. That can create a bunch of inbound links to your site and get you indexed quickly, not to mention the traffic you'll get from the people who read the articles in the e-zines.
I didn't submit my site (http://www.gas-mileage-tips.com) to any of the search engines. I'm using Wordpress blogging software as a content management system on the site and I have it set up to auto-ping a TON of RSS feed sites, including Yahoo and MSN, every time I post a new article. That got me into MSN in a couple of days, but Yahoo is still ignoring me after a couple of weeks.
A friend mentioned my site in his blog and Google indexed me a day or two later. I got most of my (very small) traffic from Google for several days, then the Google traffic disappeared. I think I've been "sandboxed" anyway, even though I didn't submit the site to Google. I'm not getting any traffic from Google any more.
I did submit my site to the DMOZ directory yesterday because it's a human-edited directory that usually doesn't go out and find sites on their own. Getting listed in DMOZ is supposed to be HUGE when it comes to your rankings on the major search engines, but it can take months before they get to your site. I'm not counting on anything happening there soon.
One unusual tactic that I'm trying came to me when I was talking to a friend. He liked my site and told me he'd e-mail it to his mother. Evidently his mother is one of those people who forwards any e-mails she finds interesting to everyone in her (hopefully large) address book. The next time I get one of those "please help with X by forwarding this to everyone on the planet" e-mails (hasn't everyone received a ton of these over the years?) I think I'll send an e-mail to the person who sends the "forward this urban legend" message to me telling them about my site and asking them to forward it to their usual list of suspects. I'm hoping that will eventually get my site blurb e-mailed to a few million people. And my site is definitely more useful than a request to send greeting cards to a kid who is dying (it was a long time ago, he survived the operation, he's all grown up now, and the hospital is tired of getting cards for him.)
Right now I'm working on an article for the free article directories, though.

Thank You Both For The Useful Info.
I guess my site had been "sandboxed".
In terms of links I have gotten my links exchanges (30)
I have very recently (2 days ago) submitted an article to sites and they have been posted so its only a matter of time. . .

The above link will test your domain to see if you have been sandboxed or not.
While Sbabb makes some valid points and I tend to agree with them on most things, one thing I do not believe is you get automatically sandboxed if you submit to search engines. I have just found that google likes to find your website some other way.
In the past I submitted all sites I worked on to the SE's and none of them ever became sandboxed. But then again, maybe I just got lucky...

Hi,
Do NOT submit your website to linkfarms, if thats what you mean by "linkdirectories". These are considered "bad neighbourhoods" by Google and will only hurt your pagerank.
To get indexed by Google fast submit your website to topic relevant blogs (there are thousands of em) make sure the blog itself has a PR 4 or more this will get your website indexed fast by Google cause everytime Google indexes that blog it will also index your website that is linked from it with it. You can also lease a Pagerank spot with certain websites but you should be able to put a free link to your website on most high ranking blogs and/or websites.
I do not think your website is "sandboxed", its just not listed cause of certain factors.
Be aware that Google likes good copy. Too often i see webpages that have a trillion links and a bunch of fancy DHTML menu's, flashbanners and tons of graphics but no copy. Make sure you have at least some copy on your webpages, free articles can do the trick if you do not feel like writing websitecopy yourself. Remember that Google indexes pages, not websites like yahoo.
Putting an RSS feed on your website will present Google with fresh content everytime its spider visits your website. The more you update your pages, the more frequent Google will visit your website.
I will get deeper into the site optimization factors in my other (coming) articles and posts but this should help for now.

One of the best way to get back links is to write an article and submit to the article directories. This way other's will bring a one way link to you at no cost. I guess that would bring google come search for you. :)
Good Luck.

Yes, i myself use this method and use a program called ezineannouncer from Jason Potash to promote my ezine and distribute my articles.
In addition to that forum marketing is the second best idea. Posting on forum's not only helps create one way links, you also profile yourself as an expert on your field. In addition to that the more you post and on as much forums you post your name will eventually be recognized.
