View Full Version : Blasted Google PageRank!!!!!
Hey everyone, I'm so glad these forums are finally here! I've been wanting to find a place to chat with other "Googleites" and hopefully discuss ideas for improving our earnings.
Back in July, I got slammed with a lowered PR. I'm really ticked about it since I'm a writer and my site has a LOT of unique content that can't be found elsewhere. I've also spent many hours optimizing my pages (SEO), but I still dropped a rank when Google decided to re-organize or whatever they did.
My question is, WHY did my rank drop? I don't feel comfortable giving my site yet, but I can definitely claim all of the pages of my site are QUALITY, well put-together and professional. No horrible flashing ads or hidden text, etc. None of the stuff that would make Google reps cringe. So why did my rank drop?
I'd love any input you all have to offer, thanks!

A change in the way they regard your backlinks?

We'd really need to see your site and research it in order to give you any truly valuable advice.

I have seen my PR go up and down, then up again. I do look at the PR numbers BUT what is more important is
1. Is my traffic changing with the PR--usually not
2. Are my conversions going up & down along with the PR--usually not.
I had one site that made more money as a PR2 then as a PR7.
Yes, PR has a certain vanity about it but your numbers are more important.
Give me a PR1 that makes good money over a PR5 that doesn't convert any day.

I agree with these comments. If your PageRank drops check to see if it affected your traffic. If not, don't worry about it!
No, it didn't affect my traffic and my Adsense income is still climbing pretty steadily, but I felt really offended by the drop. LOL Only because I see some of the sites out there with higher ranks than mine employing dirty tactics. It's exasperating! Oh well though, not much I can do but play by the rules and hope the Google Gods will reward me in the afterlife....hehe! Thanks for the input everyone. :)

They are right, WSB. Turn the green bar off and focus on the important things. :)

Thought that it was important to point out that Page Rank is only connected to how many quality links you have to your site and has no connection to how SEO'd your site is.
If you want to find out your Page Rank without using the IE toolbar, then you can visit http://www.checkyourpagerank.com

I heard this rumor that PR tends to move depending on which Google server you query...not sure though. I would say that maybe someone with a high PR was linking to you and suddenly stopped. Like I once had a PR on one of my new sites go from nothing to 3 with one link from a PR 9 site. So if that could happen then who knows. Any chance you are willing to share what site you have? We could take a peek.

There wouldn't be any change in PR depending on which server you query, although your PR will go up and down depending on who links to you.
What you see in the toolbar or sites such as checkyourpagerank.com is not necessarily indicative of that which Google is using to rank your site, as they only change this rank on an occasional basis.
If you have a link from a PR 9 page, then it could significantly change your PR value.

Where do you check your PR anyway?
The site I used to check it out, now is showing pageranks for ALL the sites = 0 (including www.google.com!!!):

I have Google page rank on my toolbar so I can automatically see my or anyone else's PR right away.
Don't get hung up on PR though, it really isn't important. Your traffic and conversions are what's important.
You can also check PR here along with other stuff

I am in the middle of updating my PageRank site. It will soon show the history of sites that you have queried in the past as well as being able to show the PR for a list of sites. It will then email you if there are any changes.
Are there any other features which you would like to be added?

Does Pagerank REALLY mean anything any more? I mean, it is good for selling links to those who place a value on it. But I'm not sure Google gives much relevancy to it anymore.

It is another factor by which we can start to value how 'important' a page/site is.

Only if you are Google, to be honest I do not even look at the PR of the pages that I frequent because it is the content that I am interested in. I agree with Joel that the only real "importance" is from a linking point of view, until Google change their algorithm and then everyone will discount it...

The green PageRank bar seen by the public is only updated every three months but Google's internal PageRank - yes, that's different to one you see!! - changes every time it crawls your site or changes it's algorythm.
Alot of net marketing folk are asking for it to be dumped as it's misleading and gets us to take our eye off the ball.
Every page on your site has a different PR so if you create a new page, it won't show any until a 3-monthly update but Google may be giving it PR4 for all you know.
As for someone getting a link from a PR9, one of those is worth around 1000 lkinks from PR1s. It's so confusing so just forget it.
Look at search results. The top ones can have PR0 followed by some with PR7 so it does not affect that.
Google even gives PR sometimes to scraper/portal sites that are against it's TOS. Explain that!!

This is all very interesting information, Flashni. Care to share how you learned all this?
I'd like to know more about how the page rank system works. I would appreciate it if you could divulge your sources.
Thanks,

I'm not expert but I do create various forms of adsense-focused search-engine-optimised web sites full time (although I spend a lot of the day in the hot tub!)
I feel it part of my job to be continually learning and keeping up to date so I scour through various quality information sites.
This information is no secret and is well known amongst the internet marketing 'gurus'.
A great site for information on Google and a posting that explains this for you is Matt Cutt's blog (http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/whats-an-update/)
He's an actual Google engineer and seems to be allowed to explain certain stuff.
Other places like SEO Chat, High Rankings or, just input your question into Google such as "is pagerank important".
Keep yourself up to date but don't get onsessed with the info. Your time would be better spent improving your site, submitting articles or building the next one.

You may be linking to a site that has been penalized or "gray barred" by Google.
You can use SEO Elite to check your backlinks. If a link you are linking to is a PR of 0 - I would further investigage it - it DOES NOT neccessairly means you should drop the link - but go to the site and use your google toolbar on your browser and see if the site has been gray barred.
