I was just looking over some messages at our forums and I think I just caught a new ad or an ad test on my site....
It was a 728x90 adsense banner showing 3 ads, and a linked type feature that allowed for me to tell the ad I was looking for training schools instead of the ads it was showing me.... Then when I clicked the training school link, it switched the ads on the same page instead of opening a new search window like the linkads...

Interesting... I don't think I've seen that yet, but it could definitely help out making the ads more interactive

Yep, happens to me too. Some times it only shows 2! And the Large rectangles only show 2-3 sometimes!

I've seen it too, it's experimental because I don't see it often.
I'm not too keen on that because it kind of ruins my efforts to bend ads in my content and site design.
It clearly says that what you see are ads (additionnaly to showing "ads by gooooooogle!") and I wish I could have a setting in AdSense to disable those things showing on my ads blocks.

yup "g" saidit was testing new ads....
I agree with it ruining the blending, i even asked g to hide the ads by g sometimes.... but that will never happen, yet if they did clicks would rise again....

I've seen them a lot over the last few months on the link for the surfer to change the ad to something else.
On the large rectangle, it depends on how many available ads they have that match the content subject you have on that page. If they have more content provided than they have ads placed for that subject, they will show less than the full load of ads on some sites. I think I read somewhere it also has something to do with your CTR whether you will get the full 4 ads or not. I wouldn't mind them showing less than 4 if they would keep the font size the same, but as it is, it keeps changing from page to page and day to day, so I never know what it will be. I agree it messes up my layout and blending efforts. Especially when you use 4 pictures beside the AdSense ad and then only get 2 or 3 ads. And some advertisers will buy the whole block so there is just one big ad.
