If making bags of cash online were as easy as optimizing your AdSense units, every other website owner would be a millionaire.
It isn’t that easy though. Blending ad units into the page is pretty simple and you can earn while you tweak but AdSense is only one part -- a vital part -- of a successful website.
The other two parts are good content and plenty of traffic.
Good content is down to you. Write about something you enjoy and you’ll find it comes pretty smoothly. Pay someone to do it for you and as long as they do a good job and you pay less than you earn, you’ll be making a nice profit.
Getting lots of traffic is always going to make you sweat though.
Again, good content is key. Give readers what they want and they’ll come back. They’ll also tell their friends and it won’t be long before other sites start linking to you. But even that won’t be enough to ace the most important part of traffic generation: a top spot on the search engines.
For that you also have to be able to target the right keywords and in the right way.
The good news is that when it comes to SEO, AdSense publishers have an advantage over other sites.
We know about Section Targeting. (If you’re not sure how to use it, check out Google’s explanation here: www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/answer.py?answer=23168).
Usually, you use Section Targeting to make sure that you get the right ads. You should be doing that anyway. But here’s the thing... using Section Targeting to help Google’s robot focus on your keywords can also improve your search engine rankings. It can tell Google to ignore the irrelevant parts of your page and increase your keyword density on the bits that are left. Exactly what the AdSense doctor ordered.
That’s particularly true if you’ve got a site with lots of Javascript or plenty of code that confuses the robots.
If you’re having trouble moving your site up the search engines, try placing Section Targeting codes on different parts of your page, and especially around code. Just remember to keep one eye on your ads to make sure that your SEO tweaking doesn’t hit your ad targeting!
