Good show on starting this forum Joel. It will be interesting to see what other people think.

As for me (Tom Simondi), there's not much to say. If you are really, really interested you can visit my personal site (http://tomsdomain.com/) :) .

My websites have been up for quite a long time (1996 (http://web.archive.org/web/19961219035827/http://www.cknow.com/) if you can stand looking at something really, really basically bad :) ), starting with Computer Knowledge, some personal stuff, and my current main site FILExt (http://filext.com/) where you are directed to come when you double click on a file in Windows that Windows doesn't know how to open.

FILExt is a really useful site, glad to have joined just for that resource, everything else is a bonus.

Hi Tom - That's a really nifty Website!
FILExt where you are directed to come when you double click on a file in Windows that Windows doesn't know how to open I'm totally impressed. Did Microsoft decide to do this on their own, or did you approach them?

When XP was in beta Microsoft put the feature in and linked it to my file extension page then located on my cknow.com site. No warning or asking.

Suddenly I started to notice a bandwidth hit from my provider. :)

After thinking about it for a bit I decided to take down the single list of file extensions and replace it with the filext.com domain. Put up a redirection link at the old location and went quickly through three different hosts as the bandwidth climbed almost exponentially. Finally found the host (http://www.dewahost.com/index-filext.html) who was willing to grow with me and have stayed with them. Also, managed to get Microsoft to change their link to FILExt although they kept the CKNOW.COM reference (sighhhh).

Of course, I had to put ads on the site to handle the ever increasing costs. Started with Sprinks and some affiliates and then Sprinks was bought out by Google Adsense which is how I got associated with them.

Since that start I now push 1Tb of bandwidth/month and somewhere around 9 million pages/month -- and still growing. :)
