My first experience here was quite frustrating. I wrote a rather long post. As I wrote I kept going to other windows to check my facts, look up urls, etc. I finished writing my post, clicked the preview button, and was told I was not logged in. My post was gone too. I know that outcome was foreseeable and my own fault, but knowing the time limit for writing a post would be nice.

Not sure, but I've been logged in for several hours right now.

When writing a post that will take a long time, I suggest using a text editor, then pasting it into the forum. There's really no reason to lose your work- what if your electricity had gone out, instead of the forum logging you out?

My guess is I had the post-creation window open for 15 to 30 minutes without transmitting. I just thought I'd ask someone who has some technical knowledge about this forum what the inactivity timeout is set at.

My UPS system lets me work for ten minutes or so after a power outage.

I usually do cut and paste posts from another program. That's good advice.

The site cookies and leaves you logged in, from what I can see. However, I will ask tech to answer this one since I don't really know for sure!

Not sure how you were timed out, since there is none for normal users. Once you login your information is stored in DB and your session identifier is stuck in cookies for your browser. So there should have been no reason for this..

I'd recommend doing the notepad thing for a while. If it happens again, please let me know and we'll talk about possible issues.

One thing that comes to mind though with the problems, I have been working on moving the site to a new server, though this is done, some DNS issues still existed for a bit. This may have caused it.

All DNS problems are fixed though, and the site works fine through the temp http://w.adsensechat.com and main http://www.adsensechat.com domains. Once the DNS updates for everyone, the site can be accessed through http://www.adsensechat.com at all times.

I don't mean to drag this thread out, but I figure if it happened to me it probably happens to others who don't say anything. I went to the vBulletin site and performed some searches on their archives. At least one webmaster was saying the timeout was set at 900 on his copy of vBulletin. I assume that's seconds, which would mean 15 minutes.

BTW I always uncheck the "remember me" box when I log in anywhere, so I assume there's no cookie. I guess I should change that behavior. It's just a habit I developed when cookies were new around 1996. <g>
