Adsense ads with pictures

I have read conflicting views on whether the new technique of showing pictures above Adsense ads is compliant with Google terms. Can anybody offer any advice on this and has anybody experienced any problems to date using this method?

Placing images that appear to be associated with the ads is fine as far as I am aware but the new policy of varying the number of ads shown will throw out the alignment, so continued value is dubious...

I've read that Google's response is to ask the Google Affiliate to put borders around the ads, to visually differentiate between the picture and the ad.

After reading a number of posts on the subject on other boards and in Usenet, I've added borders to the ads that I've put immediately below pictures.

That also doesn't make me look like an idiot when the ad is for a $50 Krups coffee pot but the picture is a $500 espresso machine.
