View Full Version : Channel Earnings Don't Add Up?
I know overlapping channels will not add up but I have one URL
channel on my domain URL that should count everything on the site once,
and a custom channel each on adlinks and on the only ad block on my main
page. The two custom channels are exclusive with no overlap.
They should add up to less that the URL channel for the whole site,
especially since I have other ads elsewhere on the site albeit on lower
traffic pages. But the sum of the two custom channels is about 20%
more than the URL channel. These are Friday's numbers -
I suppose the URL channel data could not be up to date.
Thursdays numbers were closer but still the custom channels
were more than the whole site. Is it possible a click is being
credited to multiple ad units but only once to the site?

The custom channels take longer to update than the URL channels, which is why you are seeing a difference. However, if you are looking at data that is more than 24 hours then it should add up.
Try giving Google a shout and see what they have to say.

I noticed that the URL channel is sensitive to all parts of the URL, but that it consolidates.
Example #1: you set up a channel URL for www.example.com. Users visit www.example.com and click on 5 Adsense ads. Your channel URL for www.example.com shows 5 clicks.
Example #2: you set up a channel URL for www.example.com. Users visit www.example.com and click on 4 Adsense ads. One user mistyped as ww.example.com and clicked on 1 Adsense ad. (this presumes your webhost will alias all undefined subdomains to your main domain's www). Your channel URL for www.example.com shows 4 clicks.
Example #3: you set up a channel URL for example.com. Users visit www.example.com and click on 4 Adsense ads. One user mistyped as ww.example.com and clicked on 1 Adsense ad. (this presumes your webhost will alias all undefined subdomains to your main domain's www). Your channel URL for example.com shows 5 clicks.

Thanks for that explanation, Terry. Awhile back I had channels set up for www.domain.com and domain.com ... never really understood why sometimes they would be the same (which is what I'd expect) and other times very different.

So the moral of the story is to set up channels as the base url and not with a www extension? I feel like saying "duh" to that one. Guess it's time to redo all the channels again. Sure glad there are smart people around here. :D

Or, at least ones that stumbled across the anomaly before you did :)
I felt the same way "dub" when I realized it and had to change all my channel urls -- tip, now that we get 200 (YEA!), don't delete the old www ones -- you will lose the history of what that channel# meant, if you do. Just add the new ones.
