Well, I was just working on one of my link directories and added
http://www.the-reference-desk.com submitted by nick - (Nick is in our forum). It got me thinking...

Perhaps there would be interest among members to have an "open invitation" for members to request reciprocal links from other members?

I got to guess there are lots of us who are looking to exchange links with appropriate websites. I'm not talking about mass untargeted link exchanges. I envision perhaps a category on this forum that would allow any of us looking to exchange links to invite others to evaluate our websites for possible link exchanges.

There's another thread on the forum right now asking about link management programs. I use Reciprocal Link Manager, and it's convenient because people who want to exchange links with me, can simply fill in a form on my site. It's really easy.

I imagine there are many members who would be interested. But, I'm not real sure if it is appropriate for this forum.

Your Thoughts... Anybody? :confused:

Members can post up to three links that they want to swap, but NO affiliate links. And please don't post links if you don't intend to swap with others. Spamming the site is not necessary.

Let's work together and help build legitimate cross-linking for sites that make sense to link with.

Scraper sites or those that are thinly-veiled attempts to capitalize on Adsense without any real content or creativity of their own will also be rejected. Think "family-friendly" and "high value", and we're on the same page.

I wonder if there are other webmasters here who might be interested in an arrangement like this:

Traffic trading...i.e., posting of prominent text links...for example, a home page link on a site with similar traffic. And...as an extra level of complexity...in order to maximize the potential return on the links in terms of PageRank....we'd want to look more to situations where there could be some triangulation of links...in order to keep them from being straight reciprocals.

For all kinds of reasons, I don't think this discussion is something that I would want to carry on in a public forum. Mostly because I would personally only consider working with sites at a certain level...no thin Adsense (spam) sites...no poorly designed sites, only family-friendly links considered, etc. And a topic like this would tend to be pounced upon by all kinds of folks who really don't have anything to offer in terms of traffic themselves.

Some of you may be aware of an opportunity I posted recently to purchase links on my sites (http://www.adsensechat.com/showthread.php?t=1134) ...basically, I am selling text link advertising on the sites. I don't believe in doing it exclusively to pass PageRank...although that's not a bad thing when it happens naturally. This is my way of making text links available on some of my sites to those who are seeking some visibility, and is appropriate for those who are looking for quality inbound links, leading to a few clicks here and there, plus a little PR benefit...and, of course, I make a little money. I've already had a number of people take me up on that offer.

But, as a separate idea, I would also be willing to consider making available on some of my sites a high-profile link trade with other webmasters who already have some decent traffic, and are willing to offer a prominent link on their home page as well to try to get their link in front of a new audience. We're talking about just one or two spots on your site's home page...nothing that would "take over" your page.

Also, I don't particularly care about significant topic relevance myself. We're talking about trading traffic...thus, the visibility factor.

This would be a very exclusive group. But if it sounds like something that might interest you, send me a PM and which sites you have that would qualify and a rough idea of how many unique visitors your site sees daily (I would think we'd need to be at 500 or better for something like this).

I don't mind playing broker on this. I don't think it will be an opportunity that a ton of people would quality for. But it just might be another way of using this great resource that Joel has created as a way of bringing together folks with similar needs and interests, as well as something to contribute.

Please be aware that, like Chuck's link pages, it requires that you have a link on your site to mine before you can create a link on my site to yours. It checks the page you enter to make sure the link is there.

To get around the Catch-22 of trying to link to someone's site who has a reciprocal linker with the same requirements, I created a page that had a link to my site on it and used that as the reciprocal URL when I added the link to Chuck's site. Then I went to Chuck's site and used his linker tool to submit my site to his link list. Once Chuck approves my linkback, I'll change the reciprocal URL in the link from his site to the URL in his link directory instead of the dummy page I used.

I'm sure that was clear, right?

Anyway, I welcome anyone who wants to add their link. If you're using a reciprocal linker like I am and you can't figure out how to get around the "it has to be on their site before it can be on your site" problem on both ends, send me a PM and I'll do the same trick for you.

I have about 50 quality web sites. All but the very newest ones are well-established, with solid PR (4-6).

While I fear the tyranny of direct link relevancy may be just around the corner, I am still open to exchanging links with other sites based on quality alone. I don't initiate link exchanges myself, with the exception of directly relevant sites. So, if you're interested, the burden is on you. I have a reciprocal linking request form on all of my sites (in other words, there's no "group submission" option available). From the Links Directory page of the site, click on Add Your Link and everything is simple from there.

Just wanted to throw this out for all new webmaster.

Do not exchange links just to exchange them. Links have to be relevant to work for you.

Title of the page that your linking to is the first thing to look at. If your site is about "health" and you link to a page that has a header title of "financing" then you simply shot yourself in the foot and wasted your time. Irrelevant subject matter.

Make sure your reciprocal links are relevant to your niche.

I personally would not link to any site with a PR less than 3. Alexa ranking is something to look at but these results can be manipulated so keep that in mind.

Best bet is to analyze the backlinks of the site you want to link to. If the site has solid backlinks from many high PR sites, then go for the link. If the sites backlinks are PR0's (being the promomant PR) then dont waste your time.

I found a great tool for link exchanges, All you have to do is type in what type of site you have and it brings up 100 high ranking websites for link exchanges in your category.

Link exchanges are great internet marketing techniques, and also social site also provide good one way links, my site climb up the rankings in days, I don't even use website submission services anymore, they get index on their own.:D
