When I read Joel's AdSense 4, I thought I was going to generate an income to pay for my website. I can't even get AdSense code on my site. In fact, when I enter the url for the landing page, Google won't accept it.
A friend of my husband's dropped by earlier today. She used to build websites and offered to give me a hand. She was able to manipulate the url code so that Google accepted it, but she couldn't figure out how to change the Google code so that the banner would appear on my page.
I have been to the Google Forum, but have not posted there. I notice a gaggle of one and two word comments. I also see that people who have asked for help there are ignored.
I felt certain Joel's forum, which I'm assuming is an outgrowth of his books, would have specific information for installing AdSense. If you can't use it, you can't sing Joel's praises!

Going to my web host is exactly the what I've done. I'm resentful that I'm having to pay for this tutoring. I feel Google's income is derived directly from advertising and I shouldn't have to pay to figure out how to get their code to work on my pages. Instead, there should be a help screen of code variations if their standard code doesn't work.

I am agree with GS_ASHOK . Just go to https://www.google.com/adsense/support/ and read all the guidelines and terms of conditions. It is higly recommened by me to read all the terms and conditions because once my adsense account is BANNED by google because of violation of adsense TOS.
Wish you all the luck for your success.

I started getting confused from this line onwards.
Explain this bit to me more. I don't understand what it means.

you can get a better idea of placement when selecting the view tab on firefox, and look at the page source.
you ca get ideas from other sites so you can manipulate the position especially for beginners.

I won't review the initial problems I had with AdSense since they are contained in my first post. However, let me pick up from where I left off.
The coach from my website host helped me. I had the page urls where I wanted the AdSense units to appear. He copied and pasted the first half banner and set it above the headline on the first page. He got the same error message on the page that my husband's friend had gotten.
BUT instead of removing that code, he added a second one. When we looked at the page a second time, both ad units appeared normally.
I should be grateful to finally get over this hump, I know. I have since added more units to more pages. And always the problem remains: first ad unit addition shows up with an error message. After adding a second unit both units appear the way they should. I want to know why and no one can explain it to me.
