I'm thinking of joining Amazon.com's affiliate program.
Does anyone around here have experience with them and care to share some tips?
Thanks,

Personally, I don't think it's worth it. The percent you make off a sale usually isn't worth what it cost to get the sale.
It might be handy if you personally order a lot from Amazon.
Just my opinion.

I have made some good affiliate commissions off Amazon over the years. It is a solid program. But in an Adsense world, the Amazon.com program needs retooling.
And they are pretty smart. So I would keep my eyes open to what they do...

P.S. - you aren't supposed to buy using your own links

Actually, the percentages are not that bad, and if you can offer a lot of links to books, CDs, DVDs, etc, that are related to the subject of your site, then sales may be rather nice and thus the commission you get.
Suppose your site is about digital cameras. You have a lot of text explaining how to use those cameras. Google AdSense to support the site. And an affiliate link to Amazon for all cameras you discuss. Now let's assume you also have lots of visitors. If your conversion rate is low, say 0.25%, every 10,000 visitors will still result in 25 cameras sold. Say a camera averages at 200 US$ and the commission is 4%, then that is 200 US$ for you. Not bad.

The idea I have is to post links for books and products that are related to my content, like Erik suggested.
I have some pages that have a fairly high number of visits but low adsense CTR, these would be prime candidates to put some Amazon affiliate links, especially since adsense doesn't always display relevant ads. My prime example is a tutorial I wrote about a Java web application framework, I used a pizza ordering system as an example for the tutorial, all I get is ads for italian food, which is not really relevant to the article.
Can't hurt to try it. I'll give it a shot.

Perhaps you should have a look at this technique that let's you target content keywords:

I'm aware of section targetting, unfortunately for most of the pages in the tutorial I find myself hardpressed to find some text not talking about pizza
Take a look, http://ensode.net/wicket_first_look.html. The tutorial has four pages, pages 2 and 3 are especially problematic.

It would be good if the amazon ads were contextual, that way I wouldn't have to do specific searches on products to add to each of my celebrity pages.
But here's a question...
Are you allowed to have amazon ads on the same page with Google Adsense ads?

Yes you are, but.......
If they became contextual,
they would not be allowed by Goog.

This is actually a very good use for ContextCASH...
