I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I received the invite from Joel. I am used to coming across forums with a lot of folks with attitudes. Granted, this is only the introduction stage...but I'm impressed with the wide variety of interests represented here, as well as the openness I've seen expressed.
I didn't get into site building to make money. I did it because I had things that I wanted to share with others. I tried all kinds of CPA ads with almost no results. I personally have been using Adsense since July of '03. My first day, I made 13 cents (of course, I couldn't have told you that at the time, under penalty of death or worse...). I now make a very nice part-time living with it, and am currently moving closer to what I would consider full-time income.
I currently have about 50 sites...but, with just a few exceptions, I still build sites because I feel like I have something new and valuable to contribute to the web...not just the ability to gain seach engine position for a set of keywords for stuff that's already available elsewhere. I am especially troubled by the new trend of rapid site building for Adsense only...where the content is largely stolen and you can tell how serious the webmasters are about contributing something of value because their goal is to launch 2 new sites a week. It's sad, because I feel like there are so many great ideas out there that have never been touched yet.
With 50 sites (and continuing to add new ones every month or so), it can be a bit overwhelming...so I've recently begun partnering with friends to build new sites. It's been a fun way to help them make some money, and a way of lightening my own load a bit.
Anyway, I intend to check back with some frequency. And I hope to get to know some of you...both learning and sharing what I've learned so far. The rules of the game are always changing....and it helps to have others who understand what you're going thru in trying to make it all work.
